Butted mail does fold under pressure more than riveted or welded, but finding and fixing the problem with butted mail is 100x easier then with riveted or welded. With that said many SCA fighters still use butted mail just for the simplicity of it. I would recommend this type of mail for anyone who isn't payed to reenact for a living. Great Video.

Linking the 4-in-1 ... By: mfumich. on 22 Jul 10, 20:45:51 Linking the 4-in-1 sections as you show from 1:20 to 2:10 is difficult at times. Sometimes I have trouble with the 2 end rings flipping. Linking the next section, as you show from 2:20 to 3:00, is just as difficult. I have found that it is easier, for me, to link the sections in the opposite order. You can make a chain of rings that looks like 2-1-2-1-2-1-2. That would be two 4-in-1 sections side by side instead of stacked. You can make a real long chain like that very fast.
@kurnous34 ... By: mfumich. on 22 Jul 10, 20:31:33 @kurnous34 Spreading the rings can be difficult if you use heavy gauge wire. I use 14 ga and it's nearly impossible to spread the coil. By: hugovondragonsfel. on 13 Jun 10, 23:04:06 instead of opening each ring why not spread the coil before cutting, that way you would only need to close rings therefore you can reduce working time and limit deformation of each ring due to bending. But I think a full hauberk takes somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000 rings to do it correctly in a 4 in 1 patten. 6 in 1 would take more, and would be heavier. If this is the first thing you've ever made as far as chainmaille goes, I'd say starting with something smaller would be better, some jewelry, or a coif. Large projects like a hauberk tend to be what people want to do first, and it turns then away from chainmaille.

Here I am out in the snow again, cracking a chainmail bullwhip made by Michael Deveny, alchemaille@yahoo.co m. The whip I have is 60 inches long, plus the fall and cracker and cost $350. He welds together all the links in the last half of the whip so that links don't fly off, though that's still a danger if enough of the welds break.

@wareswez Sorry ... By: wareswez. on 04 May 10, 23:44:42 @wareswez Sorry ran out of space.. Use a jewellers saw for the ring cutting, its a bit slow but the quality of the results amazing. Although crafting a device to use to cut the rings using a jewellers saw is quite an acheievment ;) I use steel rod that I hacksawed a groove into. This allows me to cut into the coil but hold it steady.
Its a slowly but surely method, but the results are complete closures of the ring barely visible. That is what chainmail should be like.
@panzuman Yeah he ... By: wareswez. on 04 May 10, 23:38:02 @panzuman Yeah he forgot to mention about the rings inner diameter (ID) and the outer diameter (OD). Both of these factors are critical to chainmail design. Many of the chainmail weaves rely on the ID & OD to help hold their form and design. There are many sites out there dedicated to chainmail. I am sure a quick search will prodvide all the info you need.
Best advice I can offer is practice on cheap metal wire, Learn to cut the jumprings cleanly (snips or pliers cannot do this)

It can't stretch in either direction because the weave is so dense. Its also not that flexible in eithr direction. Its perfect for torso, but for sleeves I'll have to loosen it.
If anyone feels my chainmail is inadequate, I challenge thee to a cardboard tube dual!
The weave is going ... By: tsp312. on 13 Jun 10, 00:34:15 The weave is going horizontal, the correct way is vertical. Going horizontal it will not be as dense as vertical (you said you wanted it to be dense) and won't be as flexible.
@JMEMantzel Think ... By: Johtas1. on 24 May 10, 06:55:00 @JMEMantzel Think he just meant historically accurately, they werent the right way. But as you're using them for like exercise, bear-protection and general kick-assery, the grain of the mail is fine : )
the main issue with ... By: hittman627. on 02 Apr 10, 17:22:38 the main issue with the weaves direction is just so that it doesn't expand vertically and stretch out (open up) under its own weight, which you can tell from the video, it is not doing. So in this case, I'd say that the weave's direction doesn't really matter
Depends what you ... By: Alex231291. on 21 Sep 09, 15:54:36 Depends what you want to do with it. For combat, you don't want vertical expansion, it'll expand under it's own weight, and leave you open. If you just want to run around and have fun, it's fine! Just a little pointer, for if you ever decide to sell to the re-enactor's market ^^

@Blademasta989 I ... By: Mayes041. on 30 Mar 10, 20:41:37 @Blademasta989 I agree with your last sentence. It really trying to compare apples and oranges. I mean put a Persian army in Greece and the Spartans beat the crap out of it with no difficulty. But put a European army in the Middle East and they get effed up (Thermopylae and crusades respectively). Bottom line for this situation I bet the Japanese had the best suited chainmail, but for the Europeans demands their chainmail was superior.
ive worked with the ... By: Blademasta989. on 30 Mar 10, 20:26:14 ive worked with the pattern. meaning, yea, it was butted, and i didnt bother to work ore with it because it was thick, heavy, and yet loose and weak. european is in every way superior to jap mail. dont get me wrong, its still a layer of metal between yourself and a weapon, but given the choice, theres no comparison.
as to the whole "crap armor" thing, it's noteworthy to mention that both Euros and Japs made armor that was a countermeasure to the weapons prevalent at the time.
@Blademasta989
... By: ihaterobbie123. on 30 Mar 10, 16:49:35 @Blademasta989
Wiki "tatami-do" it's the armour style used by the ninja. The chain is closely sewn and muffled.
And when you say you've made it, you'd better not be talking about butted mail because there's all too many "smiths" out there who make chainmail shirts that aren't closed properly.
Also, mail only really gives in to stabs, japanese armour would only use chainmail in places prone to slashing.
I really hope you understand that the japanese didn't wear crap armour for centuries.
ive crafted both, ... By: Blademasta989. on 30 Mar 10, 14:32:13 ive crafted both, and mainly dislike it because of the flat middle ring holding 4 ohers all at different angle. its weaker for the same weight as any european weave.
And for the record, i'd think the last thing a ninja would want is to rattle and chime while they are sneaking about in chain armor. it would make more sense to wear boiled leather or cloth-muffled plates sewn to the leather.
@ihaterobbie123 I ... By: Mayes041. on 30 Mar 10, 03:33:20 @ihaterobbie123 I wouldn't really expect it to be very good stabbing protection, though I don't really consider chainmail in general to be very good protection against stabbing. I think that if your trying to avoid slashes then it would be completely fine. Admittedly I assume it would absorb less blunt force. But yes, thinking about it chainmail is really best against slashes, and the Japanese weaves would be great for that.

It ... By: ihaterobbie123. on 30 Mar 10, 01:57:43 @Blademasta989
It also is the standalone protection for large portions of the arms. Not to mention that the ninja had quite a lot of chainmail in their armour as their primary protection.
I don't know why people badmouth japanese chainmail, it was around way before european chain armour and is actually very tough provided it's not butted.

Guys i have a question:Why should someone make a chainmail vest???He will go to the crusades?? Consider about the time and think whether it's worthwhile or not......I mean what's the actuall purpose of making one?? To admire it on room's wall??

There are a lot of people responding saying that butted mail will break too easy when contact is made. This is true to a certain extent.

@kurnous34 that's very true, now that i think about it. EVERYONE IGNORE ME. also, thank you for posting these videos! i always assumed making chain mail would be really really tough and labor-intensive but really all this would take is some patience and practice. :D
By: kurnous34. on 25 Jun 10, 23:00:17
@KrahulikIsGod true but i dont approve of wooden rbs, they will warp break and you wont get evenly sized rings
By: KrahulikIsGod. on 25 Jun 10, 05:40:55
@kurnous34 another really good place to find wooden dowling is at hobby stores
