I made a presentation about the book of kells and the celtic art influence in modern day aesthetics. We have some churches here in the south of Brazil still wielding celtic elements, notably coming from Iberian-Gothic architecture; specially the 3 olive leaves, resembling the ancient Iberian triskel being adapted and used by the romans as a symbol of trinity such as the clover in ireland.
These knots reminds me of keltic princesses hair knots in paintings.

Hammock-Hanging Knots - This is my favorite way to hang a hammock, because it makes it so easy to adjust your hanging height. The whipping around the tree will not slip if tied corerctly. The extra loops will bear as much load as there is friction between the tree and rope. That's not to say don't use them because they do prevent slipping just not load bearing.

You should not however tie a hammock to a tree using just the wood (regardless how big the tree is). The strain on the tree is very large. The tree isn't only holding your weight, it's holding your weight times a multiplier based on the angle of the line. Granted some large trees wont be hurt it's almost ALWAYS better to use some form of webbing or "tree hugger"

first I make a slippery figure of eight loop,
on the loop I make a half hitch to make sure that the loop easily can be untied.
Then I make the loop an connect it with a slippery hitch.

You tie the knot apply strain something gives say its the line how do you then measure just how much strength is left in the knot?
